The Validation method

Validation is a method to communicate with disoriented old people during the progression of the different stages of their disease, developed by Naomi Feil a social psychologist from Cleveland Ohio, USA, over her long lasting experience of study and observation of disoriented elderly.

Her method particularly applies to old-old people because very often their disorientation, behaviour and signs thereof are due also to psychological causes as scientific studies have demonstrated.

The idea behind Validation therapy is the acknowledgement of the elderly’s beliefs, actions and behaviours so as to “validate” all those feelings that inhabit the confusion of their mind.

To “validate” means to recognize a person’s own feelings, to deny these feelings equals to rejecting the validation of their identity. Empathy becomes therefore an essential aspect of this method, together with specific training, learning to really accept the other and to communicate with him/her beyond words.

The Validation method can apply to one-to-one relationships as well as to group meetings. It is a method of communicating and scoring disorientation progressive stages but it also helps family caregivers who are confronted with Alzheimer’s-related problems every day.

THE VALIDATION TEAM

At A.S.P. ITIS, a team of experts trained with Validation method have been applying this theory while carrying out their daily work with disoriented people for years.

Our team is composed of three teachers certified by the Validation training Institute and they are authorized to teach in professional courses, workshops, seminars and meetings.

The Validation teachers Francesco Mosetti d’Henry, Ilaria Maracchi and Miriam Tonetto have been working at A.S.P. ITIS for many years coordinating, developing, and implementing, in many different ways, person-centred approaches to improve the quality of life of our residents, particularly of those suffering from Alzheimer’s.

Since 1999 they have began to approach the Validation method, achieving all the training levels both as one-to-one caregivers and as leading team caregivers; moreover they are certified teachers and they are authorized to disseminate the Validation method.
